The role of learning during career-building: school-based training

This study analyses the data on full-time, state-funded LIS students admitted into a BA or MA programme from 2011 through 2014.
In the next 5-10 years a generational change is expected, since about a quarter of librarians will retire. In order to replace them, 250-300 new graduates per year would be needed. The low number of new admissions foreshadows that LIS education will not be able to meet the needs of the labour market in the short term either.
The study draws attention to certain phenomena in training that may critically impact library education and the situation of new professionals.

Analysing admission data to LIS education at the BA and MA levels, broken down by LIS schools, from 2006 to our days (regarding both the number of applicants and those admitted to regular, correspondence, and evening courses, as well as to combined forms of education resp., being financed from grants, state funds or own sources) it can be observed that the number of those admitted was roughly the same in the first years, while there came a dramatic decline, from 2012, after setting the advanced-level GCE exam as requirement and decreasing the number of those receiving support from fellowship funds. The figures on training indicate negative trends. The author comments on proposals to optimise various forms of education.

Resources and tools of legal reference in Hungary. Part 2. Information services on legal practice and legal literature

Part 2 of the study describes information services on legal theory and legal practice. First, the Hungarian court systems and the types of court rulings are overviewed. The resources presented include periodical publications, collections of decisions, also in electronic format. The listing covers, in a new chapter, also historical sources of legal practice at courts, followed by the sources of legal literature.
Essential information on law is to be found in bibliographies, encyclopaedias, dictionaries, handbooks, professional journals, and – as specific sources – commentaries on and explanations of legal regulations, as well as files of sample documents. Electronic materials, first of all legal databases, assume a significant role too.
The first part of this study was published in Könyvtári Figyelő, 2015. no. 4. pp. 426‒438.

15 years of the EU Deposit Collection at the Library of the Hungarian Parliament

The EU Deposit Collection at the Library of the Hungarian Parliament is 15 years old. EU publications have changed a lot over this period. Initially, information could be obtained from printed documents only, while nowadays e-materials are accessible on many electronic platforms. Earlier, the Official Journal of the European Communities arrived in Hungary with considerable delay, and free access to the Celex database was granted only in the EU Deposit Collection and European Documentation Centres. Today, EU legislation in force is accessible in 24 official languages in the Eur-Lex database updated daily.

Having clarified the concept of outsourcing the review presents British, Italian and Hungarian examples of its application in libraries. Calls attention to that during outsourcing libraries may act not only as clients, but also as service providers offering better-quality and more efficient services to users.

A review of the progress of research into Tabula Hungariae

A recent publication presents the history of the first known printed map of Hungary issued in Ingolstadt in 1528, including many facets of producing and publishing this valuable source. This review summarises the opinions and interpretations provided by researchers of the topic, who contributed to identifying the creator of the map as well as to the research on the original manuscript of the map. The review evaluates the findings of relevant research and discusses the book’s formal merits and inadequacies.

A dream of half a century. Building plans of the National Széchényi Library in the palace quarter of Józsefváros
in the first half of the 20th century

The museum collections housed in the building of the Hungarian National Museum, opened in 1846, including the national library, faced a serious shortage of space already in the early 1900s. The cultural government prepared several plans for the extension of the museum building and to adequately accommodate the library. The article covers the plans prepared in the period between 1906 and 1950, to extend and to move the library, as well as to raise a new building. Most of the plans envisaged the new location for the national library in some building of the so-called palace district in Józsefváros (Festetics, Esterházy or Károlyi Palace), or in the building of the National Riding Hall.
Most of these plans have not been implemented. Before moving to the Budavár Castle (in 1985) the national library was housed in the building of the National Museum, in the Festetics Palace, and in other parts of the city in leased premises. It has been an important issue ever since to solve the extension of the national library, or to find a new location for the institution.
